Abstract: PWM rectifiers are used to convert AC voltage to DC while achieving improved power factor and minimized total harmonic distortion (THD) on the AC side. This work presents a detailed modeling approach of a single-phase PWM rectifier based on a dual-loop proportional-integral (PI) controller. The converter operation is analyzed, followed by mathematical modelling of its control structure comprising of an inner current loop and an outer voltage loop to ensure DC-link voltage control and AC-side current reference tracking. Frequency domain analysis based design is used to tune the PI controller parameters. The performance of the designed controller has been verified by simulation in MATLAB Simulink environment. This work will be extended to implement a single-phase AC onboard charger, employing the PWM rectifier as the grid-side converter cascaded with a DC-DC converter for charging EV batteries.
