Abstract: This paper presents the development of a shunt hybrid active power filter (SHAPF) for the improvement of current-associated power quality problems by employing a robust adaptive filtering technique. The proposed method isolates the fundamental component from harmonics and makes the source current sinusoidal and balanced even during absent and fault conditions of the load. Unity power factor operation is achieved, and reactive power demand from the source is greatly reduced for different load applications. Separation of the fundamental component is achieved by updating the adaptive weight equation, which reduces the error for each iteration. Further, a predictive current control scheme, which regulates the current, is applied. The dynamic optimization of the error between the predicted reference and actual currents gives the optimal control performance of the system in all loading scenarios. The proposed adaptive filtering method with predictive current control gives the improved performance of the SHAPF system in terms of reactive power sharing, less %THD in source current, less computational complexity, and robust control. The mathematical analysis is carried out, and simulations are performed using MATLAB/Simulink software, and the comparative evaluation of the results with the existing methods is presented.
