Abstract: Supramolecular polymers (SPs), emerging as non-covalent counterparts to traditional covalent polymers, involve the interconnection of small molecular monomers through directional and reversible non-covalent interactions like H- bonding and metal-ligand interactions.1 This results in the formation of one-dimensional molecular aggregates characterized by their responsive nature to external stimuli and dynamic behavior. This presentation explores the light-induced dynamic control over the foldability of SPs, drawing inspiration from protein foldability-unfolding and light-induced ring opening supramolecular polymerization.2 The strategic design of monomers plays a pivotal role in promoting proficient supramolecular polymerization by enhancing the strength of noncovalent interactions between monomer molecules. Our investigation reveals that the Fc unit, with its restricted rotational flexibility, serves as an excellent facilitator for achieving the ideal conformation required for effective intermolecular interactions in 1,1’-disubstituted ferrocenes containing non-covalent functionalities, thereby increasing the probability of successful supramolecular polymerization. 3,4 Furthermore, I will present recent advancements in G-quartet-based unique SPs, showcasing their ability to undergo heating-induced aqueous phase transitions. These aqueous SPs displaying phase transitions, can serve as smart supramolecular materials for diverse applications in materials science, nanotechnology, biotechnology, and healthcare.
