Abstract: Osman Sagar was created by damming the Musi River in 1920, to provide an additional source of drinking water for Hyderabad and to protect the city after the great Musi River flood of 1908.The flood problem and the shortage of drinking water problem have been solved after the Nizam consulted Sri Sir M. Visvesvaraya. The Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar lakes are home for large number of native plant and animal species, therefore water quality and health of the lake are vital for conservation of these species. The present study aimed at evaluation of the Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar using NSF-WQI as an indicator of water quality. WQI is a suitable tool to examine and classify spatial and temporal variations in water quality and pollution levels in a water body. Water pumping sites were selected, and sampling of Water is done by taking composite samples. Water samples will be taken and placed in dark bottle, kept in ice box to prevent any change in chemical properties of the samples prior to transportation to the lab for further analysis. Nitrates, orthophosphate, NH4 + , NH3, Iron, Salinity, Electron conductivity (EC) and pH were measured. Water quality assessment carry out based on values obtained from nine factors including Dissolved oxygen (DO), Fecal coliform, BOD, pH, Water temperature (0 c), Phosphate, Nitrate, Total suspended solid (TSS) and Turbidity According to the test results, Water quality index (WQI) in both reservoirs is ranging between 50-70. Himayat Sagar has a water quality index value of 56.66, while Osman Sagar has a value of 57.1. are indicating that the available water quality status as Moderate quality. As per our results more parameters of water need to be much treated before supplying to the consumers in the present time.
