Abstract: Fatigue crack growth retardation behaviour on application of single overload cycle in 2024-T3 aluminium-alloy sheet has been studied. It is concluded that a critical value of overloading ratio is required to develop substantial crack growth retardation. The overload induced crack tip plastic zone and crack closure level have been found to control the delay behaviour significantly. It is also found that a power relationship exists between delay cycles and retarded crack length
