Abstract: Hydroxyapatatite (HAP) is stable in body fluid and in dry or moist air up to 1200°C and does not decompose. It can also directly forms chemical bonding (i.e. bone bonding) with hard tissues. Hydroxyapatite coated implants are used for Hip replacements, dental implants and porous hydroxyapatite implants are used for local drug delivery in bone. Limitations of this bio active material to implant are low tensile strength, low fatigue resistance, elastic modulus mismatch and resultant stress shielding. Therefore, HAP–Al2O3 composite coatings on metal implants for orthopedic and dental applications are suggested in order to achieve a synergistic effect of bioactivity and high mechanical strength.
