Abstract: Topology control is one of the major techniques used to enhance the network capacity at network level and adjusts the transmission power at node level. Proper adjustment of transmission power not only increases energy efficiency but also reduces the network interference. The topology control protocols minimizes the maximum power used by the nodes and at the same time preserves different network constraints like connectivity (biconnectivity), k-neighbor set etc. In this paper we critically analyze the different approaches, constraints, and methods used for topology control algorithms and discuss some of the open issue in ad hoc and sensor network environments.
