Abstract: This research proposes an energy management system for a solar and wind based composite renewable energy system that integrates a combined energy storage system comprising a battery and a supercapacitor. The intrinsic variability of renewable energy generation requires synchronization among sources and storage systems to maintain stability of DC bus voltage. A proportional-integral (PI) controller operates in the dual V-I loops for power flow control and system stability. To further improve its performance, Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is employed to fine-tune the gains of the PI controller. Despite the fluctuating solar and wind power, the energy management PSO optimized PI improving the dynamic response while minimizing steady-state error and refining the power distribution. Individual and simultaneous fluctuations in PV and wind energy generation is considered for simulation work in the MATLAB environment. The PI controller based on PSO technique integrated in the improved EMS shows DC bus voltage stability and enhanced transient response. The simulation results validate the effectiveness of energy management for green energy systems with composite storage.
