Abstract: This paper presents a chipless radio frequency identification (CRFID) tag design highlighting a dual-sided resonator configuration, printed on both sides of flexible substrates. The proposed tag is designed on a 30×30×0.5 mm³-sized polyethylene terephthalate (PET) flexible substrate. The proposed dual-sided resonator configuration allows the tag to encode multiple data bits in a small area, which results in high code capacity. The electromagnetic simulations are conducted using a Plane wave excitation and an RCS probe to analyze the proposed multi-bit CRFID tag’s performance. Bending tests are performed under various conditions to study the ability of flexible material in CRFID tags for wearable applications. The resultant RCS backscattered response of a CRFID tag represents the effect of bending in terms of frequency shift, which can lead to the misunderstanding of the original identification. As a data processing step, the MATLAB tool is used to detect the responses. Finally, the tag is analyzed by designing with different flexible dielectric materials to find a suitable flexible substrate for wearable applications.
