Abstract: | This study investigated the impact of Waste Engine Oil (WEO) in the compaction process and explored the compaction mechanism of HMA. The major scopes of this study include modification of asphalt binder using WEO, conducting performance characterization, and analyzing workability through compaction studies. The research methodology involves preparing HMA using Viscosity-graded (VG) bitumen modified with WEO and WEO combined with lime, along with control mixtures using Superpave Gyratory Compactor. Compaction parameters including Compaction Densification Index (CDI), Traffic Densification Index (TDI), Compaction Force Index (CFI), and Traffic Force Index (TFI) were analyzed to evaluate workability. Research findings showed that WEO-modified bitumen reduces viscosity, enhancing HMA workability, while lime increases viscosity. Workability indices demonstrated an improved compaction efficiency in mixtures with WEO compared to control mixtures. Particularly, the WEO and lime mixture exhibits superior workability, suggesting reduced susceptibility to post-production issues like breaking or segregation. Overall, this study provides insights into the compaction mechanism of HMA modified with WEO, contributing to state-of-the-art pertaining to the design and development of sustainable pavement infrastructure. |
