dc.description.abstract | The utilization of uranium mill tailings in construction materials, particularly in concrete, has garnered significant attention due to its potential implications for radiation safety and environmental impact. Uranium mill tailings, generated from ore processing and uranium concentration, offer an avenue for incorporating waste into building materials, serving purposes like sand replacement in concrete, mortar, and foundation backfill. However, the indiscriminate use of these tailings raises concerns regarding radiation exposure. To address these concerns, considerable efforts have been directed towards regulating and stabilizing the incorporation of uranium mill tailings in construction practices. One notable approach involves the creation of cemented uranium tailings backfill using alkali-activated slag, which has demonstrated efficacy in mitigating radiation hazards associated with uranium tailings disposal. The overarching goal of such endeavors is to curtail potential risks posed by radiation and contaminants across various environmental settings. While research endeavors have explored solidification techniques for incorporating uranium tailings into concrete, ensuring the implementation of appropriate measures remains paramount to mitigate potential radiation hazards. This invited talk highlighted the critical importance of responsible management and utilization of uranium mill tailings in construction applications, emphasizing the need for stringent regulatory frameworks and effective stabilization techniques to safeguard human health and environmental integrity.
