Abstract: | In the present paper, vibration attenuation ability of the composite MRE sandwich beam affixed with piezoelectric patches on the face layers in supersonic flow regime is studied. Aerodynamic pressure is modeled by the super-sonic first order piston theory. The dynamical model of the structural system is obtained using Hamilton principle and the solution is arrived via finite element approach. A linear quadratic regulator (LQR) is employed as a controller to the system to enhance the flutter response characteristics of the composite MRE sandwich beam. When external gust loads are also applied, the time domain responses are computed based on Runge–Kutta method, to analyze the control effects on the sandwich beam with MRE core and piezo patches. Results show that piezoelectric patches on the surface of the sandwich beam can improve the critical aerodynamic pressure of the system, thereby increasing the aerodynamic elastic stability of the composite sandwich structure. LQR control scheme supplies reasonable actuation voltages that can effectively suppress the vibration response of the beam. |
