Intermetallics are the chemical compounds between two or more metals with crystal structures which are different from those of the parent metals made from. These compounds include rich structural chemistry and novel bonding behavior; but least understood with respect to their bonding behavior. Understanding and rationalizing the rich structural chemistry and the associated complex bonding behavior of intermetallics has remained extremely challenging. To understand the underlying chemical bonding, and the interrelationship among structure, bonding and some physical properties, we have studied R-Mn-Au (R = Y, Gd) systems. We found that the heteroatomic bonding plays significant role towards the structure stability. In this talk, I will discuss largely the structure, bonding and magnetic properties of Y3MnAu5 and R4Mn3-xAu10+x (R = Y, Gd) compounds.en_US
