Abstract: Coal is the prime fossil fuel in India and continues to play a vital role in the energy sector. Coal accounts for 60% of the commercial energy needs and 70% of electrical power in India comes from coal. Coal combustion emits large amounts of harmful gases and is also responsible for global climate change. Indian coals being of drift origin, contains large quantities of impurities which are intimately mixed, and poses serious challenges in implantation of conventional clean coal technologies. Coal conversion in the form of gasification and liquefaction provide better alternatives in optimum utilization of our resources along with minimizing the emissions significantly.
