Abstract: Functionally graded materials (FGMs) with a gradient of properties (such as porosity gradient) have attracted recent interest in the field of biomedical application. For orthopaedics applications, bioactive glasses having composition SiO2-Na2O-CaO-P2O5, offers advantage of being class A biomaterials, which are osteoproductive as well as osteoconductive. Sol - gel derived bioactive glass exhibit substantially greater rates of trabecular bone growth and a greater final quantity of bone than Hydroxyapatite. In the present work porosity gradient bioglass based scaffold has been prepared by simple uniaxial pressing methods. The less porous outer layers of the porosity gradient scaffold are made for superior mechanical strength and inner porous layers are made with 30 and 50 % porosity for superior bioactivity. Different mechanical and in-vitro bio-logical properties have also investigated and reported.
